Criteria for Selecting Public Members for Health Care Oversight Boards

The concept of public membership has earned near universal acceptance, but we have a long way to go in designing criteria for identifying and selecting public members. Virtually every licensing board enabling statute states thing that would disqualify someone from serving a public member. Very few specify affirmative qualities and experience to seek in a public member. Some voluntary credentialing bodies have developed criteria to guide the selection process. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services adopted criteria for selecting Medicare beneficiary members to serve on the Boards of Directors of Quality Improvement Organizations.

At this Webinar, speakers identified criteria they believe should guide the identification and appointment process.
