Arthur Levin is Director of the Center for Medical Consumers, a New York City based non-profit organization committed to patient rights, patient safety, evidence-based, high quality medicine and transparency. From 1976 thru 2000 the Center maintained a free medical library for consumers. Because the building in which it was housed was sold and demolished, the Center has moved to smaller offices which do not permit public access. However, the Center continues to publish its monthly newsletter HealthFacts, which offers a critique of medical and health practices based on the available scientific evidence and expert opinion. The Center's web site provides extracts of newsletter articles, describes current advocacy efforts and provides information on hospital and doctor surgical volume for New York State. Mr. Levin was a member of the Institute of Medicine's Committee on the Quality of Health Care that published, "To Err is Human" and "Crossing the Quality Chasm" reports. He is currently a member of an Institute committee that is evaluating the federal quality effort and making recommendations to Congress. He is also a member of the FDA's Consumer Consortium, which recommends consumer representatives for FDA Advisory Committees and is a member of the NY State NYPORTS statewide workgroup that has redesigned the hospital incident reporting system. Levin has also served as a guest expert on risk management at FDA Drug Advisory Committees. He earned his Masters of Public Health degree from Columbia University School of Public Health and his Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from Reed College.
