CAC's 2013 annual meeting will be held in Seattle, Washington, on Tuesday and Wednesday, October 29 - 30, 2013. This year, the theme of the meeting is Regulations Impact on Access to Safe Affordable Care. Since major sections of The Affordable Care Act will go into effect in January 2014, it is timely to discuss access because the addition of millions of currently uninsured citizens will place strains on the health workforce.
The purpose of state-based health professional licensing is to protect the public health and safety. Legislatures enact statutes and licensing boards promulgate rules with that purpose as their stated goal. But there are occasions in which laws and rules, inadvertently or not, erect obstacles that impede the publics ready access to safe, affordable care. CACs 2013 Annual Meeting will identify some of the impediments that regulations can create, showcase innovative regulatory policies and programs designed to overcome impediments, and propose additional ideas for facilitating access.
This is the third time that CAC has held our annual meeting in Seattle in cooperation with the Washington State Department of Health. CAC commends the Washington State Department of Health for its continuing effort to make health professional regulation as effective as possible, and for strongly supporting public representation on licensing boards.
